Yes, a photo of a QR code works

Why it works

The squares are the data. Your camera does not read a special ink or a chip; it looks for the three large squares in the corners, works out the grid from them, and reads the light and dark cells as bits. A photo of the code is just another surface showing the same cells.

The design expects damage. Every QR code carries error correction, and the standard behind it (ISO/IEC 18004) defines four levels: roughly 7%, 15%, 25% or 30% of the code can be unreadable and it still decodes. A slightly blurred photo, a crease, a thumb over one corner: these are the cases it was built for.

When it does not work

Blur and glare. A photo taken in a hurry, or of a glossy card under a spotlight, can lose enough of the pattern that even the highest correction level is not enough. Retake it flat and out of the light.

Too small in the frame. If the code is a tiny square in a wide photo of the whole table, the scanner may not find it. Crop the photo so the code fills most of it, then scan the crop.

Cut off. All three corner squares need to be visible. A screenshot that clips one edge of the code fails every time.

The code was dynamic and the owner turned it off. Some QR codes point at a redirect the owner can change or disable later. The pattern still scans; the link behind it is dead. For a wedding upload code this is the reason to use a link that stays live for the whole collection window.

How to scan a code that is already on your phone

On an iPhone, open the picture in the Photos app and touch and hold the code; recent versions of iOS recognise it in place and offer the link. If nothing happens, show the picture on another screen and point the Camera app at it, which is what Apple’s own instructions describe.

On Android, open the picture in Google Photos and tap the Lens button, or open Google Lens directly and choose the image. Most camera apps also have a ‘scan from image’ option in their QR mode.

Either way, the simplest route is often the oldest one: show the photo on one phone and scan it with another.

For wedding hosts: expect the photo, and design for it

Half the people who reach your upload page will not scan the card on the table. Someone will photograph it and send the picture to the group chat, and that picture will be scanned from the sofa the next morning. This is a feature. Make sure the version that survives a photo still works.

Print the code large, at least the width of two fingers on a table card, on matte paper, with clear space around it. Put the link in plain words under the code for the people who cannot scan at all. Test by photographing your own card from a chair, sending the photo to a friend, and asking them to scan it. Can I scan a QR code from a screenshot?

Yes, as long as the whole code is in the screenshot with a little space around it. Open it in Photos or Google Lens and it scans like the original.

Does a QR code expire?

The pattern never expires. The link behind it can, if whoever made it used a redirect and switched it off, or if the page it points to has been removed.

Can I text someone a QR code?

Yes. Send the picture, and they scan it from their screen or from the photo. Sending the link itself as text is even simpler, which is why a good card prints both.

Why will my phone not scan the code in a photo?

Usually the code is too small in the picture, blurred, or clipped at an edge. Crop tight around it, or show it on another screen and use the camera.
